More than 800 million people in the world go hungry. In developing countries, 6 million children die each year, mostly from hunger-related causes. In the United States, 13 million children live in households where people have to skip meals or eat less to make ends meet. That means one in ten households in the U.S. are living with hunger or are at risk of hunger.

But we CAN end hunger.

We have the means. The financial costs to end hunger are relatively slight. The United Nations Development Program estimates that the basic health and nutrition needs of the world's poorest people could be met for an additional $13 billion a year. Animal lovers in the United States and Europe spend more than that on pet food each year. What makes the difference between millions of hungry people and a world where all are fed?

Only a change in priorities. Only the will to end hunger.

Join Bethesda Covenant Church on Sunday, May 7 as we learn more about Bread for the World, a nationwide Christian citizens movement seeking justice for the world's hungry people by lobbying our nation's decision makers, from guest Bryan Phelan.

Phelan, a North Park Theological Seminary intern at BFW, will speak to us about how we can be a part of making poverty history by writing our congress members to support the United Nations milenium development goals, becoming advocates for the poor and hungry, learning more about hunger around the world, and understanding a Biblical and Christian perspective on hunger. He has worked at BFW since June 2005, where he works in church-relations and focuses particularly on introducing Evangelical churches to the mission and ministry of BFW. the 2004 Covenant Annual Meeting approved a resolution that encouraged all Covenant Churches to become covenant partners with the advocacy organization (Click here to view the resolution).

Bread for the World has been in existence for over 30 years seeking justice as a Christian voice for ending hunger. The nonpartisan citizens' movement includes 50,000 people of faith, including 2,500 churches and is supported through 45 denominations and church Agencies. BFW members help hungry people by lobbying U.S. decision makers on legislation that addresses hunger in our communities and around the world. It also brings attention to the media about issues of hunger and helps educate the public about hunger through its partner organization, Bread for the World Institute.
